How Much Does It Cost to Become a Dental Assistant in Texas?

So, how much does it cost to become a dental assistant in Texas? For most people the total is roughly $3,000 to $5,000 for a short, state-approved Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) course and exam, plus about $100 in state registration costs (TSBDE application, fingerprinting, a background report and a passport photo). Two-year college degrees cost considerably more, and the biggest cost many people forget is the paycheck they give up while they train.

Houston Dental Assistant School (HDAS) in Houston, Texas offers a 10-week hybrid RDA program for $3,550, which includes the TSBDE-approved RDA course and exam, American Heart Association BLS certification, your textbook, lab supplies and job placement support. Lectures are online and hands-on labs meet on Saturdays, so you can usually keep your current job while you train.

We have trained dental assistants in the Houston area for more than 20 years, and cost is the first question almost every prospective student asks us. Below is the complete picture: every fee Texas requires, what is usually (and not usually) included in tuition, and the ongoing costs after you are registered.

The total cost of becoming a Registered Dental Assistant in Texas

Here is what a typical Texas RDA candidate pays from day one to holding a registration. State fees come from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) and related agencies and can change, so confirm current amounts before you apply.

What Texas requires before you can register as an RDA

In Texas, a dental assistant needs an RDA certificate to take dental x-rays, which most offices expect from day one. According to the TSBDE registration application, you will need:

  1. Proof you completed a TSBDE-approved dental assistant registration course and its exam
  2. Proof of high school graduation or a GED
  3. A current hands-on BLS CPR course (online-only CPR is not accepted)
  4. Fingerprints for a criminal history check
  5. An NPDB self-query report, still sealed and less than 60 days old
  6. Proof you completed an HHS-approved human trafficking prevention course
  7. A 2×2 passport photo, a copy of your ID and a notarized application
  8. A jurisprudence assessment if your course and exam were more than a year before you apply

Each of these items carries its own small cost, which is why the true total is always a little higher than tuition alone. For the full timeline, see our guide on how long it takes to become a dental assistant.

Cost breakdown: training, state fees and the extras

Training and the RDA exam

This is the largest line item and the one that varies most. Short, TSBDE-approved RDA programs at private schools and continuing-education departments usually fall in the low thousands. Community college certificates and associate degrees take one to two years and generally cost more once you add semester fees, books and uniforms.

When you compare prices, ask whether the RDA exam fee, BLS card, textbook and lab supplies are inside the tuition or billed separately. Two programs with similar sticker prices can end up hundreds of dollars apart.

TSBDE application and background check

The state side of the process is modest. The TSBDE fee schedule lists the dental assistant initial application at about $40. Add fingerprinting through IdentoGO (about $40), the NPDB self-query ($3), and a passport photo. Plan on about $100 in total.

BLS CPR certification

TSBDE requires a current hands-on Basic Life Support card from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Some programs include it; if yours does not, budget for a separate class.

Scrubs, supplies and getting to class

Scrubs, closed-toe shoes, gas and parking are easy to forget. They are small individually but add up, especially in programs that meet several days a week.

The hidden cost: time away from work

For career changers, lost wages are often bigger than tuition. A program that meets on weekdays for several months, or requires an unpaid externship, can mean giving up a paycheck for that whole time.

A simple way to compare: multiply the weekly pay you would give up by the number of weeks you could not work, then add it to tuition. A program that lets you keep working full time removes most of that cost. That is the main reason we built our program around online lectures and Saturday labs.

How much does it cost to become a dental assistant at HDAS?

At HDAS, tuition is $3,550, all inclusive. According to our tuition overview, that covers:

  • The full 10-week Registered Dental Assistant program (10 Saturday labs)
  • The TSBDE-approved RDA course and exam through the Texas Academy of General Dentistry
  • American Heart Association BLS certification
  • Textbook, student binder, lab materials and supplies
  • Study guides and practice exams
  • Resume writing, interview coaching and job placement support
  • Instruction in English and Spanish

No externship is required. Your remaining out-of-pocket costs are the state registration items (TSBDE application, fingerprinting, NPDB report and photo, roughly $100) plus your scrubs and travel.

If paying all at once is not realistic, we offer two payment plans with no loans and no credit check: $975 to start and then 10 weekly payments of $288, or $1,675 to start and then 10 weekly payments of $218. Either plan totals $3,855, which includes a $305 plan fee; paying in full avoids that fee. Employers can also sponsor staff, and we invoice them directly. For more ways to lower the cost, read free dental assistant training in Texas.

We have campuses in Katy and The Woodlands/Spring, and our Pearland campus opens January 16, 2027. You can see the full schedule on our 10-week dental assistant program page.

Ongoing costs after you are registered

Your RDA registration must be renewed. TSBDE assigns some registrants a one-year and others a two-year renewal, and the fee follows its current fee schedule (the most recent schedule we reviewed lists about $72 for a dental assistant renewal, with penalties for late renewal). To renew you also need continuing education hours and a current hands-on BLS card. Check the TSBDE RDA renewal page for the current requirements.

Many employers pay for continuing education or BLS renewals, so ask about it during interviews.

Is the cost worth it?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median pay of $48,070 a year for dental assistants (May 2025) and projects 7% job growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 53,000 openings each year. Pay in your first job depends on the office, location and your skills, but a short program that costs a few thousand dollars can be paid back quickly once you are working.
