Dental Assistant Program Requirements in Texas: What You Need to Enroll

Most dental assistant program requirements are simple: you need to be old enough to enroll (often 17 or 18), have a high school diploma, GED, or college transcript, and show a government-issued photo ID. Short career programs rarely ask for test scores or prior dental experience, while college programs may add a separate application, immunizations, and screenings before clinical work.

The requirements to enroll are not the same as the requirements to become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) in Texas. The state adds a few steps after your course, such as fingerprinting and a hands-on CPR/BLS card. Below, we walk through both lists so nothing surprises you.

Houston Dental Assistant School (HDAS) in Houston, Texas offers a 10-week hybrid RDA program for $3,550, including books, supplies, healthcare-provider CPR, study guides, and the Texas state RDA exam. To apply, you must be at least 17 and provide proof of high school completion, a U.S. government-issued photo ID, and a Social Security Number or a TIN with a valid work permit.

What you need to enroll in a dental assistant program

These are the dental assistant program requirements that matter most, and how to get each one ready.

Minimum age

Many programs set the minimum age at 18. Some, including HDAS, accept students at 17 with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. If you are still finishing high school, ask the school whether you can apply now and start once you graduate.

High school diploma, GED, or college transcript

Proof of high school completion is the one requirement almost every program shares, and it is also a state requirement. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) requires RDA applicants to have graduated from an accredited high school or hold a GED. If you finished school outside the U.S., plan ahead: HDAS asks that foreign diplomas be validated by a credential evaluation service such as SpanTran.

Photo ID and Social Security Number or TIN

Bring a current U.S. government-issued photo ID, such as a Texas driver’s license, state ID, or passport. HDAS also asks for either a Social Security Number or a TIN along with a valid work permit. These documents matter later too, because the state RDA application asks for a copy of your ID.

Extra steps some programs add

College and longer certificate programs often have a separate program application on top of general college admission. Programs that place students in clinics may ask for immunization records, TB screening, a drug screen, or a background check before you work with patients. None of these are unusual; just ask for the full list before you pay a deposit so you can plan the time and cost.

Texas dental assistant requirements for RDA registration

Finishing a program is step one. To work as a Registered Dental Assistant, which allows you to take dental x-rays in Texas, you also apply to the TSBDE. According to the board, applicants must:

  • Have graduated from an accredited high school or hold a GED.
  • Complete a course and pass an exam from a TSBDE-approved provider, or hold a current DANB certificate and pass the TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment.
  • Submit fingerprints for a criminal history record check.
  • Complete a current, hands-on basic life support (BLS) course. Online-only CPR is not accepted.
  • Complete an approved human trafficking prevention course and include proof with the application.
  • Send supporting documents, including a 2×2 passport photo, a copy of your ID, a copy of your BLS card, and a National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) self-query report.
  • Pay the application, exam, and licensing fees.

The TSBDE says a complete application typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to process, and longer during peak graduation season. You can read the full list on the board’s RDA x-ray certification page. For a breakdown of the state fees, see our guide to how much it costs to become a dental assistant in Texas.

If you have a criminal history

Because the state runs a fingerprint check, a past conviction can affect your registration even if a school admits you. The TSBDE offers a criminal history evaluation you can request before you enroll, so you know where you stand before investing in training. We encourage anyone with a concern to do this first.

What is included at HDAS

Our tuition covers several items on the state list: healthcare-provider CPR (the hands-on BLS card) and the Texas state RDA exam, along with books, supplies, and study guides. You still handle the state application, fingerprinting, and the other documents yourself. If you have questions about the state paperwork, ask us; we have helped students through it for more than 20 years.

How to enroll at HDAS, step by step

  1. Visit or call. Many students start with a Saturday campus tour to see the space and ask questions. Admissions is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm CT, by phone or text.
  2. Gather your documents. Proof of high school completion, a U.S. government-issued photo ID, and your SSN or TIN with a work permit.
  3. Submit the application. The online application takes a few minutes, and submitting it does not commit you to anything or require payment.
  4. Talk with a campus director. A director follows up to confirm your seat and walk you through next steps.
  5. Reserve your seat. Pay in full, or choose a weekly payment plan; a minimum $975 deposit reserves your seat, and seats fill in the order deposits are received. See the tuition overview for plan details.
  6. Start class. Upcoming sessions begin January 16, 2027 (Winter), April 3, 2027 (Spring), and June 26, 2027 (Summer).

We have campuses in Katy and The Woodlands/Spring, and our Pearland campus opens January 16, 2027. Each campus is hosted inside a working dental practice, and classes and instructors are available in Spanish.

What the program itself requires of you

Admission is the easy part. The bigger question is whether the schedule fits your life. Our program runs 10 weeks: on-demand lectures during the week that you watch on your own time, plus hands-on Saturday labs in small groups of 4 to 5 students. There is no unpaid externship.

In our experience, the students who do best plan for steady weekly study time, protect their Saturdays for lab, and keep up with the online lessons rather than cramming. If you are working full time or raising kids, that rhythm is usually manageable. Our guide on how long it takes to become a dental assistant compares this pace with longer college options.

Pre-enrollment checklist

  • Confirm you meet the minimum age (or have parent or guardian consent at 17).
  • Locate your diploma, GED, or transcript; start credential evaluation early if it is from outside the U.S.
  • Check that your photo ID is current.
  • Have your SSN, or your TIN and work permit, ready.
  • If you have any criminal history, request a TSBDE criminal history evaluation before you pay tuition.
  • Ask each school for its full list of admission requirements, start dates, and what tuition includes.
  • Make sure the course is TSBDE-approved if your goal is RDA registration.
